Failed pipework, made safe and repaired

Burst Pipe Repair Sydney

A split pipe can push hundreds of litres an hour into a wall, a ceiling or the ground beneath a slab. The work divides cleanly: shut the supply down, get the building out of danger, then rebuild the failed section with materials that will not fail the same way again. Tell the enquiry form what burst and where.

Burst pipe questions

Where do I turn the water off?

Look for the meter at the front boundary, usually in a box near the footpath or fence line; the stop valve beside it shuts the entire property down when turned clockwise. Individual fixtures often have their own quarter-turn stops underneath, closing one of those keeps the rest of the house running while the burst is dealt with.

Why did my pipe burst in the first place?

Age and corrosion carry most of the blame: thinning copper, rusting galvanised steel, perished flexi hose cores. Water hammer, excessive street pressure, ground movement and tree roots finish the job. A repairer should be able to say which factor applied, because that answer decides whether the rest of the line is living on borrowed time.

Will insurance cover the damage?

Many Australian home policies cover sudden escape-of-liquid damage (soaked carpets, ruined plaster, damaged contents) while treating the failed pipe or hose itself and gradual seepage differently. Photograph everything before cleanup, keep the failed component if you can, and check your own policy wording, since terms vary between insurers.

Should the section be repaired or the whole line replaced?

A first failure on an otherwise healthy line justifies a point repair. Repeat failures, visible corrosion along the run, obsolete materials like galvanised steel, or a burst on a line that is difficult to reach each push the answer toward renewal. Honest quotes lay out both paths with the reasoning, not just the bigger number.

The burst is under the slab. What are my options?

Three, broadly: cut and excavate the slab at the located failure point, reroute the affected line overhead through walls and the roof space, or abandon the failed run and re-plumb that circuit entirely. Which wins depends on how precisely the failure is located, floor finishes, and whether this line has failed before.

The water is brown after the repair. Is something wrong?

Usually not. Repairs disturb sediment inside older pipes and introduce air, so the first draw can look cloudy or discoloured. Run the outside taps first, then internal cold taps for a few minutes. If discolouration persists beyond a day, mention it, persistent staining points at upstream corrosion worth assessing.

Never step into standing water in a room where the power is still on, and stay from under any ceiling sagging with the weight of water. If the supply cannot be isolated and water is approaching the switchboard, keep everyone clear and treat the situation as an electrical emergency first and a plumbing problem second.

How it works

How a burst gets fixed

  1. 01

    Stop the water

Close the nearest working stop: the fixture's mini valve, an internal isolation valve, or the meter stop valve at the front boundary. Turning off the meter kills supply to the whole property and buys time without further damage.

  2. 02

    Describe the failure

Where water appeared, how fast it flowed, what the pipe looks like if visible, and photos of the failure point, meter and affected rooms let the repair be scoped before anyone arrives.

  3. 03

    Scoped repair quote

The quote states what gets cut out and rebuilt, the materials used, whether renewal beats a point repair, and how excavated or opened surfaces will be reinstated.

  4. 04

    Repair and verification

After the rebuild, the line is pressure-tested and returned to service, isolation points are left labelled and working, and the paperwork the job requires is provided.
